Our Story

Before founding Law Office of Rolando D. Cantu in 2018, Attorney Cantu served as an Assistant District Attorney for Hidalgo County, prosecuting state criminal cases and developing a deep understanding of how local courts operate and how the DA's office makes its decisions. He then served as an Assistant United States Attorney in the McAllen Division of the Southern District of Texas, one of the busiest and most consequential federal districts in the country. In that role, he prosecuted narcotics trafficking conspiracies, firearms violations, human smuggling cases, and immigration offenses, working alongside the DEA, FBI, ATF, and Homeland Security Investigations.

Before his time in prosecution, Attorney Cantu served as a Briefing Attorney for the Thirteenth District Court of Appeals under Chief Justice Rogelio Valdez, drafting legal opinions on complex criminal and civil appellate matters. He graduated cum laude from the Thurgood Marshall School of Law at Texas Southern University, is licensed in the State Bar of Texas and the United States District Court for the Southern District of Texas and has been a featured speaker on legal ethics at the Hidalgo County Bar Association Criminal Law Conference.

He founded Law Office of Rolando D. Cantu because he believed the Rio Grande Valley deserved a criminal defense firm built on that level of experience, one where clients work directly with an attorney who has been on the other side and knows how to fight back.

Rolando Cantu

Native to the Rio Grande Valley, Rolando Cantu was born in Weslaco, Texas, and raised in Mercedes, Texas. He attended the University of Texas-Pan American. Through his hard work and diligence, he received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science. Driven by his passion for becoming a qualified and licensed lawyer by profession, Rolando Cantu continued his studies with zeal and focus at Thurgood Marshall School of Law-Texas Southern University. He graduated Cum Laude and successfully earned his Juris Doctorate Degree, before becoming a licensed lawyer in 2006.

Upon earning his J.D., he was hired by the Thirteenth District Court of Appeals to serve as a Briefing Attorney to Chief Justice Rogelio Valdez. Rolando Cantu was a valuable addition. He performed in-depth research and drafted hundreds of opinions for both civil and criminal appellate matters. This further contributed to his practical understanding of State law.

His passion for criminal defense got him the opportunity to serve as an Assistant District Attorney for the County of Hidalgo. He served for eight years, where he prosecuted hundreds of cases, including capital murder, aggravated robbery, assault, burglary of a habitation, felony theft, sexual offenses, intoxicated assault, and driving while intoxicated. Most recently, Rolando Cantu served as an Assistant United States Attorney for the Southern District of Texas-McAllen Division.
